Sussex Barn Wedding, Steven & Amie – Norfolk Wedding Photographer!

Norfolk Wedding Photographer

A Sussex Barn Wedding

Steven & Amie

Sussex Barn Wedding, North Norfolk. This wedding has been one that has been starred in my diary for what seems like forever. After photographing both Amie and Steven in their home city of Shoreditch, London, I completely fell in love with them as a couple! I could not have asked for more creative, kind and like-minded clients than these two! Both extremely driven and passionately in love, these guys are making it happen for themselves in the most down to earth way possible, which instantly made me so intrigued in their lives and personalities! I knew from the off that both Amie and Steven were going to have a spectacular wedding and didn't they just! You can find Steven and Amie's pre-wedding shoot here! Or, if you're here to scroll through their big day, stay put!

One thing I love more than anything at a wedding (apart from lovely people) are flowers. The more flowers the better! And when Amie admitted that she had approached the infamous Swaffham and Fakenham Florist with a multiple page slideshow, I instantly knew that this wedding was going to be brimming with greenery and floral colour! Teamed with the one and only Penny at The Little Lending Co. Steven and Amie's Spring wedding day boasted a rustic, tropical theme of pastel blues and bright pinks along with a bohemian vibe achieved through Persian rugs, wicker chairs, brass candlesticks and contrasting modern perspex pew ends (that displayed two beautiful floral arrangements and a chalk painted 'A' and 'S' on each one! - Penny you are a genius!) When I first spoke with Steven and Amie I was a little apprehensive as yes, the Sussex Barn is all set up for beautiful weddings, but The White House was far from finished with its major renovation taking place just half a year before the wedding. I met with Steven and Amie six weeks before their big day to have a scout round this idyllic hideaway wedding venue in the quaint north Norfolk Town of Burnham Market and I was absolutely struck with how incredible the house looked. This stunning multiple bedroom 'house' is light, airy, super modern and boasts the most beautiful exterior with the original features still very much apparent. (F.Y.I. The White House can be booked for holidays and weekend get-aways! I'm certainly thinking about hiring it out after this manic 2018 wedding season!)

I am so lucky that I have the fantastic Eloise from 'Rose & Spear Photography' to call upon when I have big, super creative weddings like this one! Eloise spent the morning documenting Steven and his Groomsmen getting ready in the morning and enjoying a quick pint to cure the nerves. Due to it being such a fantastic, creative wedding, Eloise decided to stay for the whole day and photographed some incredible shots capturing a different angle of this beautiful couple and their friends/ families - thank you lovely lady! Both Steven and Amie were so thrilled! I could go on and on about this stunning wedding day as I honestly felt like these guys were more friends than clients. Amazing day, amazing venue, amazing people, amazing flowers, amazing styling and AMAZING dresses! Scroll down to see Amie's super elegant Stephanie Allin gown and the bridesmaids Needle And Thread multi-coloured beaded designer dresses that I wanted to take home for myself!! This is a beefy blog post with over 200 images, so grab a coffee as it is a long one! Meg x

AT HOME COUPLE SHOOT

At Home Couple Shoot, Norwich Norfolk. This pre-wedding couple shoot has had me bouncing around like a yo-yo the past few days as it was so ‘lit!’ Both Simon and Bryony had asked me if they could have their engagement shoot at their home, little did I know that they have spent 3 whole years renovating a very old and very dated pub into an incredible personalised and rustic styled haven with each room providing me with at least 3 stunning backdrops. If you have read my previous blog post, you will know how much I love it when couples put their stamp, character and style into their shoots whether it is through clothing, music, accessories, pets or colours. I don’t think this shoot could be any more personal to Bryony and Simon – scroll down and you will see why I cannot smiling from ear to ear! Also, I will give 10 points to those who can guess the colour theme to this beautiful couple’s Oxnead Hall, Norfolk Wedding! Hint – look at the walls! Not only was Cross Keys House so photogjenic, so were the couple! I adored how besotted these two are with each other! Their wedding day in August is ging to be a breeze to photograph especially with my very good friend, Melissa Abel doing the make up!!

If you would like to read more information about my chilled out, super fun couple/ pre-wedding shoots take a look at my previous blog post here! Alternatively, if you are planning your wedding and are seeking a creative film style photographer who loves the relaxed and unobtrusive styled shots pop me a message via my contact page! I would love to hear from you!

Countryside Wedding – Norfolk Wedding Photographer

A WHIMSICAL SUMMER WEDDING IN THE NORFOLK COUNTRYSIDE

If you live or visit Norfolk its very hard to see past the beauty of the Norfolk and Suffolk countryside. Understandably there is a risk when it comes to organising an outdoor wedding as our British weather can be so temperamental and completely random at times! But there are so many benefits to organising a wedding that is solely based amongst the Norfolk fields/ woodlands/ barns AND apparently, Norfolk is the driest country of the UK (bonus!)

The Norfolk Wedding featured on this blog post is of Craig and Shani’s big day. They were fixated on having an Norfolk, Outdoor Wedding where they could have the day of their dreams alongside the people that mattered most with only the cows watching over the fence (one of which did have a cheeky Houdini moment and jumped in with the tents – he got herded back in with the others before running around the marquee!) The wedding took place at Hush Venues, just outside of Norwich, Norfolk where they were able to put up a gorgeous pole marquee and lots of teepee tents for their guests to stay in. The woodland was decorated all ready for their outdoor ceremony with paper lanterns, candles, lavender and gorgeous little hand made cushions.

Please have a little scroll and read through Craig and Shani’s reflection of their day – I really hope it persuades you to go for it and organise an outdoor wedding of your own!

OVERVIEW OF THE DAY

“We worked from a blank canvas choosing every aspect of how we wanted the day to look and feel. First thing was to find the right venue, we knew we wanted a wedding outdoors with some woodland and we found the most beautiful setting in Norfolk at ‘Hush Venues‘. The invites we designed ourselves, we even took a trip to an old paper mill in Hemel Hamstead to find the right card to use. We bought props and extra flower pots etc from an auction and collected numerous honey jars to use as tea light holders. We had lots of help from the family. Craigs mum did the flowers, Shanis Father in law played the accoustic guitar for the ceremony, Shani’s father brought the beer from bradfield brewery in sheffield, Craigs Dad did the morning after BBQ, Bridesmaids and Best Men were on hand to bring out the self catered food and pour the toasting lemoncello. but really, everyone helped in one way or another. We started planning 18 months prior to the day as there was lots of planning for us, from hiring the right marquee to stitching up the bunting.”

“The thing we enjoyed most was when we walked from the woodland after the ceromony, the music started, the sun was shining and everyone was really enjoying themselves we thought today was gonna be a great day!”

THE DRESS

“The Dress was bought from a vintage wedding dress shop in York, called Glory Days Vintage. It was the 4th shop i’d been too and on the way there my sister had said ‘right we’re going to find the one today’ and after trying on about 6 dresses all true vintage the lady in the shop suggested a bias cut silk 1930’s shape dress, at first I was dubious becuase i’d tried on a bias cut 1930’s gown in a previous shop and it looked hideous but this one fitted like a glove and was so flattering. I tottered around in it for a little while and then looked at my sister and she knew it was the one. So 14 months before the wedding i’d already picked my dress.”

THE FOOD

“We had prepared hamper boxes for the tables which contained a number of exciting things from a local Artisan Bakers called Pye Baker, it was like one big picnic. After food there were speeches toasted with vintage espresso cups full of lemocello, there were laughs, hugs and tears (hopefully of Joy). Once the bellys were full and speeches were finished everyone was back out enjoying the sunshine and music.”

“Soon the evening guests started arriving, grabbing a drink from the icy wheelbarrows joining in with conversation, it started to feel more energetic. The music tempo was increasing, conversation slightly louder, drinks disappearing more quickly and before long everyone was up and around the marquee dancing.”

A LITTLE ADVICE

“Some advice for those planning: Don’t be afraid to break the mould. Your ceremony can be whatever you want it to be if you wish. We chose to do the legal part the day before to allow us to marry entirely outdoors (as this isn’t currently legal in England). If you want an Norfolk outdoors ceremony somewhere not so reliable for the weather then be brave and go for it (also have a plan B of course) as the chances are it will be fine. In general, if you want to do things a little differently then do. Most importantly you need to ensure that you ENJOY YOURSELF!”

A STYLED SHOOT

A WOODLAND, EARTHY WEDDING SHOOT FEATURING A TALENTED
TEAM OF NORFOLK & LONDON BASED WEDDING SUPPLIERS

woodlandwedding

At University I spent 3 years following my love for fashion and beauty photography which resulted in having to organise shoots consisting of a concept, location/ studio, model(s), hair stylist, make up artist, fashion designer and clothing stylist. Unfortunately, due to the high demand for constant work I felt as though every shoot I organised was rushed and not thought through enough in order for it to be a success. Shooting around 3 times a week resulted in huge amounts of stress and ‘rushed’ work. I absolutely loved a shoot that was well organised and the images reflected my vision however I have not organised a ‘styled’ shoot since… until now.

Due to the Wedding Season now starting to quieten down I am always looking for photography techniques and ideas to get me inspired – (this is where Pinterest comes in!) Since photographing weddings I have fallen in love with outdoor ceremonies. Whether this is a Woodland Wedding, Festival Wedding, Garden Wedding or even a  Farm Wedding – you name an outdoor venue I will be 100% excited. I just love anything that is DIFFERENT anything where my Brides and Grooms can put their stamp on it and create a day that reflects THEM and not conform to your standard, stereotypical day. Yes, we live in England and yes it may rain but that is the thrill!

I am a country girl and love the fresh air and open outdoors. I have always wanted to shoot a ‘styled’ shoot where both the outdoors and weddings combine. I began searching under the category of ‘earthy weddings’ and ‘english rose’ and found so many absolutely beautiful images that just made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!

woodlandwedding

After weeks of swooning over so many beautiful photos I finally felt totally and utterly inspired to organise a ‘styled’ shoot representing all things outdoors; beautiful, dainty and unique. I had seen some gorgeous and different wedding suppliers via ‘The Most Curious Wedding Fair.’ One supplier really caught my eye – a collection of gorgeous, hand drawn, linen animal masks designed by London based designer  ‘Animalesque.’  I popped Sara (the designer) an email asking to borrow the masks for the shoot I was planning and she said yes (hooray!) and a shoot was in motion. Strangely enough (I think it was fate) a few days after planning the shoot I was approached by a lady called Katy Rayner (Bracken and Twine Floristry) enquiring if I organise styled shoots. I had a look at Katy’s Facebook page and just fell-in-love. If you are looking for a real unique, English, artistic bouquet you NEED to check this talented lady out. Her style is EVERYTHING! I informed her about the ‘Earthy styled’ shoot I was planning straight away as her and her designs fitted in with the theme so well – so she designed a gorgeous hair circlet and huge woodland bouquet. I then contacted the lovely Kate (By Kate Elizabeth) a fab stylist who I have worked with over the past couple of years and she recruited GORGEOUS models Alisha Whitworth and Kate Winser. I then saw that the very lovely Gemma Holiday (Gemma Holiday Hair Stylist) was home from America and she recruited seriously talented Missy (Melissa Abel Make Up Artist) AND A TEAM WAS BORN!

As always, when you have a brilliant plan nothing ever goes smoothly! We had issues with Mr. Postman resulting in masks not arriving on time, model sickness (and then Kate Winser stepped in), traffic jams, losing keys – you name it, it happened (bar the camera going wrong thank goodness!)

Due to not being able to shoot the masks the most of the team were able to meet again the following day so that we could re-shoot so that the masks were featured! Life savers!

Location wise we shot at the very beautiful Wensum Park, Norwich which was just perfect and incorporated everything from the mood board with over grown, woodland areas along with marble walls and gorgeous lakes and old stone steps. The dresses were sourced from the Big C Cancer Charity (Norwich) and were so beautiful and so fit for the purpose of this very English styled shoot – the detailing and the sleeves were just fantastic!

I was so pleased to be able to feature Sara’s (Animalesque) hand made, bespoke masks. The masks themselves are nothing like anything I have ever seen before and gave me such a nostalgic feeling when I saw them (they reminded me so much of Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit.) I was super eager to photograph the set of bespoke animal masks as I would so love for my Brides and Grooms to feature something similar (or the same!) for when it comes to photo opportunities and also simply having FUN at their weddings! The masks would suit many of my outdoor wedding bookings and would really aid in getting my Brides/ Grooms/ Guests in getting relaxed in front of the camera! Sara also designs special childrens masks that would be SO lovely on a little page boy or flower girl (hint hint 2017/ 2018 brides and grooms!) I was so excited to photograph Sara’s incredible designs and was more excited when I finally got my hands on them (a day late thank you to Mr. Postman!) and saw for myself the amount of detail and hard work that goes into every single one – it was incredible. the beaded work, the feathers and the sketch like print of the animals onto the material just worked so well together!

THE TEAM

Melissa Abel

Melissa Abel Make Up Artist's approach on the day!

“My brief for Alisha was for her to look natural to complement the earthy tones of the shoot. I love Groundwork by MAC so this was my first choice for the eye base. On the lid I also used a selection of soft browns focusing the deeper shades closer to the lash line and graduating the colours upwards blending with my trusty #217 brush. I used Teddy also by MAC under the eye blending with a pencil brush to soften the line. Alisha’s beautiful skin was perfected with Cliniques beyond perfecting foundation which has become a real favourite of mine this season. I mixed some shades from my lip pallet to create a natural matt lip to compliment the skin and eyes.

I wanted Kate’s makeup to work with Alisha’s look however be individual to her and still compliment the shoot theme. I used a similar process on the skin and eyes omitting the deeper shadow tones and eyeliner giving a lighter feel. The focus for Kate was a strong berry lip mixed again from my lip pallet.

Day two I found myself setting up a make studio by the side of a road, we had great fun creating another soft look for Alisha this time my star product was rose pout matt lipstick by Illamasqua. Perfect for a natural yet madeup look.”
